It’s not all bad news. This blog started as a compendium of dangerous, flawed, and just plain poor designs. But I’m just as capable or recognizing and complimenting superlative designs.
Every once in a great while I encounter something that is just so well designed that even I can find nothing wrong with it. It surprises. It delights. It surpasses expectations. It simply performs as advertised. This page is dedicated to such products. I look forward to populating it soon, with the few, the proud, the exemplary designs that make me say “Wow, this thing is really, really nice.” To the skilled men and women who created these successes, I salute you!
Recently I was forced to ponder the difference between “design” and “engineering.” I think these products provide perfect examples of the importance of design in addition to simple engineering. Anyone can become an engineer. But it takes a special breed, a certain way of thinking, to become a good designer. There is wisdom in this for those who understand.
